The importance of addressing violence that affects children cannot be overstated.
Our community's children are at the same time the most vulnerable in the cycle of violence and our best chance at interrupting that cycle. When a child is exposed to the abuse of a parent, the consequences can be serious and long-lasting. Children are also negatively affected by the daily stress, uncertainty and chaos that follow the abuse. Even if a child doesn't actually witness the abuse, knowing of the abuse can still have a powerful affect on them.
Empower Tehama provides both response services and prevention services for children and teens to provide each with the tools he or she needs to a live a life free of violence, regardless of what their experiences may be.
The future of our community depends on our children.
Camp HOPE America, Tehama
It is estimated that between 2 and 10 million children in the U.S. witness domestic violence each year. Resiliency and competency in children and providing “turning point” opportunities can help children overcome the trauma. The violence they experience on a daily basis leaves them at a greater risk for such things as poverty, substance abuse, crime, lower educational attainment, intimate partner violence, and child abuse.
Camp HOPE America offers a unique experience for children exposed to trauma and abuse with an evidence-based camping and mentoring program. The vision for Camp HOPE America is to break the generational cycle of family violence by offering healing and hope to children who have witnessed family violence.
Each year, Empower Tehama coordinates the attendance of Tehama County children at Camp HOPE America - California’s nearest site at Kidder Creek, near Yreka, California. In 2017, we were pleased to send 12 campers, as well as support staff, and in 2018, we’re excited to be sending 24 Tehama County children to camp. Their attendance at camp is made possible entirely through community donations of funds for camp fees, transportation and staff as well as in-kind donations of items they’ll need at camp. Camp HOPE America - California, Tehama can use your support year-round. For more information, contact us online or give us a call. Child Abuse Treatment
Empower Tehama offers professional therapy services for children who have been victims of abuse or neglect at our recently established Counseling Center.
Empower Tehama provides counseling services at local schools.
Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children (CSEC)
The commercial sexual exploitation of children, or CSEC, can have a lasting and often debilitating effect on its victims. As much as we'd like to think CSEC is not a problem in our community, the evidence says otherwise.
Teen Dating Violence Prevention
Teen Dating Violence - much like domestic violence, comes in many forms. It can be subtle yet damaging to a teen’s self-worth. Empower Tehama works in local schools to provide teens with the tools they need to develop healthy relationships and to recognize and put a stop to abuse when it occurs. Students learn healthier ways to communicate within their peer groups and in their relationships through an evidence-based curriculum and through presentations and activities held throughout the academic year. Youth leaders, trained by TDVP staff, volunteer as ambassadors to their schools, reinforcing the message of “no tolerance” for teen dating violence and by modeling upstanding bystander behavior.
